The research project Optocubes explores the development of a smart engineering platform intended to accelerate the transfer from photonics-based concepts and/or research results acquired, e.g., in professional laboratories, to their versatile and customized application by engineering out-of-the-lab prototypes. To reduce the need for interdisciplinary expertise, the comprehensive research concept combines agile prototyping with interconnected networking on the software side and a modular hardware approach, all available under an open-source license. An emphasis is put on the use of additive manufacturing, single-board computers and the incorporation of industrial aluminum extrusions. The resulting advantages for developing, and implementing high-precision optical testing devices are especially geared towards small and medium-sized enterprises, the start-up scene, and the creative industry.
